He joined the U.S. Navy Reserve Forces on July 5, 1918 and was called to active duty on July 6, 1918. He served at the Naval Training Station Great Lakes in Illinois.
In 1920 and 1930 he lived in Elyria with his wife Ruth. They lived close to his parents.
In 1940 he and his wife Ruby and their two sons, as well as his mother-in-law Marian Johnston, lived in Elyria. He and his family had lived there in 1935 as well. In 1953 he lived in Elyria.
