Notes for Clemens Wenceslas Gilles
His baptismal sponsor was Clemens Wenceslas, Archbishop and Elector of Trier. (Source: Records of St. Servatius Church in Landkern).
As archbishop-elector of Trier, Clement Wenceslaus was one of the most powerful persons in Germany. In 1786, three years after this child’s baptism, he took up residence in Koblenz which in 1018 had been given to the Archbishop of Trier. Koblenz remained in the control of the archbishop-electors until the end of the 18th century. (Source: Wikipedia, with information from the Encyclopaedia Britannica)
