He was born in either Germany or Poland. He immigrated in 1866 and became a naturalized citizen.
In 1880 he and his wife and two children lived in Columbia, Lorain County, Ohio with his wife’s parents and two of her sisters, as well as two boarders, Frank and Christian Cichy. In 1900 and 1910 he and his wife lived in Olmsted Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They lived next door to the family of Frank Cichy and his wife Mary Klein, the sister of John’s wife.
When his daughter Frances was born in 1883 his name was listed as John Cichy; when Helen was born in 1886, his name was listed as John Sheak and hers as Helen Mary Sheak.
