Quoting from the War Department press release:
“First Lieutenant Dan R. Kuchenrither, then second lieutenant, was the leader of a platoon that advanced on the main enemy machinegun position [near the town of Bardenberg, Germany] and eliminated the nest. The Ohio Infantry lieutenant, whose home is on Sugar Ridge Road, Elyria, Ohio, and was later reported killed in action while leading Infantrymen in the attack in Holland on November 20, stated:
‘While the attention of the German gunners was fastened on the daring advance of Sergeant Pendleton, my platoon was able to approach the main position by way of an intersecting street. We were able to liquidate this emplacement in an assault with hand grenades....’ ”
