His baptismal sponsors were Friedrich Christian Lemme of Alt Pokrent, Hans Heinrich Johann Hedinfelt of Niendorf [Neuendorf], and ... Jochem Schuenemann of Hindenberg. He was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pokrent, Mecklenburg [in 1853?].
Joseph immigrated in 1860 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States. In 1870 he lived in Russia Township, Lorain County, Ohio with his wife Dorothea and her daughter Mary and their daughter Emma. His family lived adjacent to the home of Frederick Albrecht and his family. In 1880 he lived in Russia Township with Mary and Emma.
In 1887 while living in Brownhelm he pled guilty to beating his 12-year-old stepson. He was fined $25 and the child was released into the custody of his uncle who had brought the complaint. In 1900 Joseph lived in Brownhelm, Lorain County, Ohio with his wife Rosa, their three sons and one daughter. He lived adjacent to the farm of his brother Henry and Henry’s wife Hannah.
He died of pneumonia.
