Notes for Franz Schmitz
Franz’s parents were Peter Schmitt and Maria Margaretha Steffes. Franz may have married Gertrud Ollig of Laubach in 1764. Her last child was born about 1777. If Franz did marry in 1764, records of St. Laurentius Catholic Church in Masburg indicate that his father Peter had died before that marriage occurred.

According to Peter Bauer, Katharine’s and Franz’s marriage required both 4th and 3rd degree dispensations. That would indicate that they were probably both 3rd cousins and 2nd cousins.
