His parents were Mathias Schmitt and Angela Welter.
In 1860 he and his wife Christina lived in Marshfield Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin with their two children and Christina’s three children from her previous marriage.
In 1870 he and his wife and their children lived in Marshfield. The census taker listed all of the children as part of the “Smith” family. Peter “Smith,” a fifty-year-old retired man from Prussia, lived with the family.
In 1885 he and his wife and four of their children—John, Christina, Anthony and Paulina, lived in St. Bernard, Platte County, Nebraska. Theodore Thome and his family lived nearby. Their daughter Eva may have married Killian Ottis and lived close to Johan and Christina’s farm.
In 1900 John and his wife lived with their son Antony in St. Bernard. His wife’s son Theodor Thome lived nearby.
