His father was from Prussia and his mother was from Brazil. The 1900 federal census reported that he lived with his parents and siblings in St. Louis (city), Missouri. However he was attending the Western Military Academy In Wood River Township, Madison County, Illinois and was also enumerated there. In 1920 he lived with his wife’s family in St. Louis (city), Missouri. He was listed as a boarder on the census form and as a married man. His wife was listed as single.
In 1930 he and his wife Laura lived in Richmond Heights, St. Louis County, Missouri. In 1935, 1940 and 1943 they lived in University City, St. Louis County. In 1935 and 1940 his wife’s brother Edwin lived with them.
