In 1850 the census reported that his name was Matthias and that he was born in Germany. In 1860 the census reported that his name was Martin and that he was born in Ohio.
In 1860 he lived with his parents and seven siblings in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1870 he and his wife and daughter Mary lived in New Bavaria, Pleasant Township, Henry County, Ohio, near the home of his parents and six of his siblings. In 1880 they lived in Pleasant Township near their parents’ home and that of his brother Joseph and his family.
