Nikolaus sailed with his family from Antwerp, Belgium on the ship “Mount Vernon,” arriving in New York, New York on August 12, 1846. He became a naturalized citizen.
In 1850 he lived with his parents and two brothers in Forest Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. In 1860 they lived in Taycheedah Township, Fond du Lac County. In 1900 he lived with his wife and three of their sons in Taycheedah Township.
