Joseph may have been the 17-year-old Joseph Schmitz who sailed from Liverpool, England on the ship “Panthea,” arriving in New York, New York on August 20, 1846. A Mathias Schmitz, 18 years old, was recorded in the passenger list just ahead of Joseph.
A Joseph Schmitz was recorded as living in Calumet Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin in 1855.
In 1880 John J. Schmitz and his wife Barbara lived in Calumet Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin with four of their children—Louisa, Theresa (listed as Ida on the census), Adelbert and Edmund.

The Rainford site gives January 6, 1844 as her birthdate. The grave marker has January 4, 1845 as her birthdate. The 1900 federal census has January of 1846 as her birth month.
Barbara immigrated in 1849.
She had 10 children, six of whom were living in 1900. In 1900 Barbara lived in Marytown, Calumet Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin with four of her chldren—Theresa, Arthur, Joseph and Ida. Her daughter Louisa and Louisa’s husband Paul Langenfeld and their three children lived next door. In 1903 Barbara lived in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin with her sons Arthur, Henry and Joseph. In 1910 she lived in Calumet Township with her children Henry P., Joseph and Ida. The 1910 federal census reported that she was born in Wisconsin and had had eight children of whom six were living in 1910. In 1920 she lived in Marytown with her widowed daughter Louisa and Louisa’s nine children.
