Joseph and his parents and three siblings sailed from Antwerp, Belgium on the bark “Infatigable,” arriving in New York, New York on July 11, 1843.
When he registered for the Civil War in 1863, he was listed as married and living in Avon, Lorain County, Ohio.
In 1860 he and his wife lived in Avon. Mary Laux, age 18, lived with them. She was probably Joseph’s sister Anne M. Laux. In 1870 he and his wife and daughter Gertrude lived in Avon Township. A 40-year-old woman named Barbara Laux, possibly Joseph’s sister, resided with them. In 1880 Joseph and Margaret continued to live in Avon, living in an area called French Creek Village.
