He and his birth family sailed from Antwerp, Belgium, arriving in New York, New York on August 25, 1856 on the “Alice Trainer.”
In 1870 he lived in Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio with his employer, J. T. Houghton, a livery keeper. Matthias was employed as a hostler—a stable man. His name was transcribed as Mathew Tall. In 1880 he lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County with his wife and three children. His name was transcribed as Mathias Tool.
