In 1880 he and his son Carl lived with his parents John and Gertrude Diederich and their grandson Charles Born and Nicholas’ sister Mary in Sheffield Township, Lorain County, Ohio.
In 1899 lightning caused a fire that burned the barn on his farm.
In 1910 he and his wife Katherine and children lived in Sheffield. His mother-in-law lived with them.
