Notes for Matthias R. Diederich

Matthias sailed with his parents and five of his siblings from Le Havre, France on the ship “Waverly,” arriving in New York, New York on August 28, 1847.
Matthias’ birth year is given as 1840 on his grave marker and his name is spelled Mathias. However the 1900 census gives August 1838 as his birth month. The passenger list for the Waverly gives his age as eight, corresponding to a birth year of 1838 since his birthday in 1847 would have occurred after the passenger list was created at the start of the voyage.
In 1870 he and his family lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio near his parents and his brother John and Nikolaus and their families. In 1880 and 1900 he and his family lived in North Ridgeville. His name was spelled Diederick in the 1880 census and Dietrich or Dutrick in the 1900 census.
He reported having immigrated in 1846 but he and his parents and siblings immigrated in 1847.
He signed his will on August 6, 1900. It was probated on November 30, 1901 in Lorain County, Ohio. The probate record transcribed his name as Mathias Duderich.

She was also called Helen and Lena. The 1870 census gives Martha as her name.

Barbara Schichtel and Bill Noll have December 24, 1856 as her birth date.
The 1900 and 1910 censuses reported that she had arrived in the United States in 1867. However her sister Gertrude was born in Germany in 1870. Her brother John was born in Sheffield, Lorain County, Ohio in 1874. Assuming she immigrated with her parents and siblings, she must have arrived between 1870 and 1874.
In 1910 she lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County with her son Aloysius (Alva/Alvie) and her daughter Helen. She gave birth to eight children, of whom six were living in 1900 and five were living in 1910. In 1920 she lived with her son Alva and his wife Louise in North Ridgeville.
Her death notice refers to her as Mrs. Mat Duderich or Udderich.
