Notes for Nikolaus Diederich

Some sources say that Nikolaus’ birth family immigrated 15 June 1847. It is possible that that is the date on which they left their home in Landkern, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Nikolaus sailed with his parents and five of his siblings from Le Havre, France on the ship “Waverly,” arriving in New York, New York on August 28, 1847.
He is not listed in the 1850 federal census for North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio with his family. Nikolaus married Emma Thome in the spring of 1870 (?). They had two children. In 1870 and 1880 his family lived in North Ridgeville. In 1870 they lived with his parents.
Nikolaus’ grave marker says 1881, 37 j., meaning he would have been born in 1843 or 1844. The ship’s register gives his age as 3, so that he would have been born in about 1843 or 1844.
Allen Huelskamp has June 13, 1847 as his birthdate, citing the Diederich Family Genealogy.
