His parents were from France. He became blind in 1865 or so. According to Barbara Schichtel, he died of heart disease.
In 1850 he lived with his parents and siblings in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio. His family and his future wife’s family were neighbors in 1850. In 1860 he and his wife and four children lived in Elyria, Lorain County. John F. Diederich (Diedrick), his wife Margaret Ternes and their child lived in the same house as they did. In 1870 they lived in North Ridgeville. On the 1860 census his last name was spelled “Kline”; in 1870 his name was spelled “Cline.” In 1880 he and his wife and children lived in Columbia, Lorain County. His son-in-law John Cichy and the John Cichy family lived with them in 1880, as did two boarders, Frank and Christian Cichy. Frank married John and Gertrude’s daughter Mary Katherine.

When her parents and their six children sailed from Le Havre, France on the ship “Waverly” that arrived in New York, New York on August 28, 1847, the child named Gertrude was listed as being age seven. She actually was 17 years old at that time.
Her family and her husband’s family were neighbors in 1850. She and her husband had eight children.
