Johann’s baptismal sponsors were Matthias Esper, mayor of Greimersburg, and Gertrud. Johann was the hoffman (overseer) in Esperhof from about 1654 to 1704. Johann was a baptismal sponsor in 1648 for Elisabeth, the daughter of Nikolaus Esper and Barbara of Illerich, and in 1665 for Barbara, daughter of Christoph Froelich and Agnes of Fahrendeierhof.

Elisabeth may have been the daughter of Johann Lauxen and Gertrud Plesser of Kavelocherhof. Her husband was sometimes referred to as Johann Esper and at other times as Johann Gilles. (See the note for Johann’s father Andreas Esper.) When Elisabeth died she was described as Johann Gilles of Esper’s wife Elisabeth.
