Matthias sailed with his parents and siblings from London, England on the ship “Diadem,” arriving in New York, New York on August 12, 1846. The 1900 census reported that he had immigrated in 1844. He became a naturalized citizen.
The 1850 census reported his age as 38, giving a birth year of about 1822. In 1863 the Civil War draft records reported his age as 42, giving a birth year of about 1821. “Copperhead” was listed under “Remarks” for his entry. The 1900 census gives November 1825 as his birth date.
In 1860, 1870 and 1880 he and his family lived in North Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio. In 1900 he lived in North Ridgeville with his daughter Gertrude, son-in-law Joseph Bleser, four step-grandchildren and one grandchild. In 1903 he lived in North Ridgeville. In July of 1906 he was confined at the Lorain County jail awaiting admission to the Mansfield State Hospital after an insanity warrant was issued. He displayed symptoms of insanity or imbecility and was picked up at Beach Park in Elyria. He was described as an Avon man.
