Johann was born in Retterath, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. He moved to Illerich, Rheinland-Pfalz, the home of his wife Gertrud Saurens, and they immigrated to Sheffield Township in Lorain County, Ohio in 1843. They took a ship called the “Maria” from Antwerp, Belgium arriving in New York, New York State on July 24, 1843. According to Allen Huelskamp, they arrived in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio on August 2, 1843. Johann was listed as a wheelright on the ship’s register.
Johann Diederich’s family was one of the 20 families listed as the original members of St. Teresa of Avila Church in Sheffield, Ohio (1845). (Information from St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, Sheffield, Ohio, 1845-1995, published by the church on the occasion of its 150th anniversary.) The church is located close to the property owned by Johann Diederich in Sheffield Township.
In 1850, 1860 and 1880 John and Gertrude and their family lived in Sheffield Township. In 1850 his family name was spelled “Litherick”; in 1860 it was spelled Dedirick. They lived near the families of John Fenner and Matthias Rothgery in 1860. In 1880 they lived in Sheffield Township along with their daughter Mary, their widowed son Nicholas and his son Carl, as well as their grandson Charles Born.
Notes for Gertrud (Spouse 1)
Source: Illerich Family Book, pp. 234 and 287.
It is interesting that Gertrud was an only child and her mother was 43 years old when Gertrud was born. Gertrud’s baptismal sponsors were Nikolaus Schmitz and Johann Geiermann of Illerich.
On the 1850 census her first name was reported to be Catherine.
